What is Emotional Labour?
“The Managed Heart," a seminal work by sociologist Arlie Hochschild, popularised "emotional labor" in 1983. The term "emotional labor" describes faking a feeling for public perception or surface acting (Brunetto et al., 2023). Emotional dissonance, a result of a mismatch between one's actual sentiments and one's idealized "official" emotions, is a common experience for those who engage in emotional work.

Emotional labor can be prevalent in any job role. Still, this idea is vital in Human Resource Management (HRM), as HR experts are often the key to a happy work environment. Among the many tasks within the purview of emotional labor in HRM include promoting employee wellness, mediating conflicts, and facilitating change. Human resource workers are expected to show understanding, compassion, and empathy towards others, regardless of their feelings. This sometimes requires HR professionals to put on a happy face even when feeling down to motivate and engage others. The simultaneous need to manage both individual feelings and the emotional environment of the company emphasizes the complexity of emotional work in human resource management (Ashkanasy et al...2017).
The Impact of Emotional Labour
Trying to connect with others, show empathy, or put others at ease may be draining. Research shows that several work-related consequences, such as burnout, job discontent, depression, and memory problems, are greatly influenced by how people handle emotional labor (Lim & Moon, 2024). This highlights how important it is for businesses to understand the emotional toll that HR professionals take and do something about it.

Recognizing and appreciating the significance of emotional labor is crucial in order to manage it effectively. Human resources professionals put in a lot of emotional work, yet many companies need to value their efforts more to provide them with the necessary tools. It is already challenging to provide suitable assistance and training due to the subjective character of emotional labor, which further complicates measurement and management.
How to Manage Emotional Labour in HRM?
Organizations might use many techniques to assist HR professionals in handling emotional labor.
· Emotional Intelligence Training: Invest in the human resources staff by giving them the tools to understand, manage, and thrive in challenging emotions. Interactions like this help one become more empathetic, communicate better, and resolve conflicts more effectively.
· Supportive work environment: Human resources professionals need a welcoming and accepting work environment that caters to employees' emotional needs. This encompasses many initiatives, including those that support open dialogue, mental health services, and an excellent work-life balance.
· Recognize and Reward: Human resource professionals put in a lot of emotional work, and it's crucial to acknowledge and reward them. Recognition programs are a great way to show appreciation for employees' hard work and dedication to their jobs.
· Set Expectations: It is critical to set clear expectations about the emotional aspects of human resources roles to prevent employment uncertainty and dramatically minimize stress. During this phase, the organization will identify the emotional competencies required for the position.
· Support and Regular Check-ins: Create regular check-ins and make support mechanisms accessible to human resources staff so they may discuss emotional difficulties and get guidance. Counseling and other forms of peer support group facilitation fall under this category.
· Opportunities for professional growth: provide professional growth opportunities focused on building emotional resilience and managing stress in the workplace. Professionals in human resources may use this to manage emotional labor better.
· Feedback systems: For human resource professionals to voice their opinions and concerns about emotional labor, it is crucial to set up feedback systems. This opens the door to creating efficient strategies and backup systems.
